Just doing it.

There's been so much new work coming out of the agency in the past week, its been hard to keep track, so I'll be posting as much as I can over the week, starting with these backgrounds that Tin&Ed were commissioned by the good folks at Publicis Mojo Melbourne for the Australian Nike Women site:

JW for Sydney Theatre Company

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Back in June, the wonderful people over at Deuce Design contacted us to develop some artwork for the upcoming 2009 Sydney Theatre Company season. The catalogue which has recently been released, contains illustrations by Dylan Martorell for both 'The Wonderful World of Dissocia', and 'The Mysteries', and Clemens Habicht for both 'Travesties', and 'Elling', the results which can be seen below:

One of my favourite parts of running the agency is to see the work unfold from the intiail brief to final art. As cliché as it sounds, it is almost like watching a flower bloom. This was especially fun, as each artist had a script to read and react to, as well as work with some stellar photography that was shot for the campaign.

Like every other project we take on through the agency, we managed it through Basecamp. To break down the whole process in its entirety would take up many hours of documentation, but perhaps these screenshots of the files that were made in the process can give you some idea of how the idea took shape and was then molded into its final form.

Clemens also sent these wonderful pics along as part of documenting his own process which shows how exactly how he was able to nail those expressions for his 'Elling' piece.

Projects and opportunities like this are few and far between, and it was a truly wonderful experience to work on, especially seeing the final product, which combined with expert art direction, design, photography, and print finishing, a definitely a thing to behold.

Where the magic happens…

You know you've really made it when your pad gets featured on Apartment Therapy, as did JW artist Madeleine Stamer recently did. Check out the pics and interview to see this bird in her native environment.

And for those of you who want to make your own magic happen, the 2008 Jean-Claude Reynal Scholarship is upon us, a 10,000 euro grant to be awarded to a young artist who works on paper to travel anywhere they like. What are you waiting for? Details here.

Believe The Hype

Lets see, where to start...

In Melbourne? Got plans for Thursday night? No? Good. Then come on down for the opening of the Lamington Drive's second show, Making~Doo, featuring works by JW artist Niels 'Nails' Oeltjen. Details here:

This weekend also saw a wonderful writeup by Dan Rule in The Age's A2 section on the agency including profiles of 5 JW artists. In case you've already lined your birdcage/litter tray/reptile tank with the paper, you can have a read of the piece over yonder.

By next week this picture will have been covered by pet droppings at least twelve times.

Speaking of interviews, I have been utterly fascinated by the recently revamped SPD (Society of Publication Designers) blog. Currently they are doing a great behind-the-scenes blog with the staff of Wired magazine on an upcoming feature on Charlie Kaufman, but the thing that grabbed me the most was this interview featuring one my favourite illustrators, Brian Cronin, in coversation with one of my favourite Creative Directors, Fred Woodward (Rolling Stone, GQ). It's a bit more personal than professional, but still a fascinating look at two contemporary masters of their craft in their prime. Check the main site out here, and the interview here.
